Description

The purpose of this course is to give students a foundational understanding of teaching English Learners (ELs). Students will become knowledgeable about cultural backgrounds and be able to select or adapt curriculum and pedagogy to meet the needs of diverse learners. The course will also focus on how to accurately assess ELs' academic achievement by developing an understanding of policies, procedures and instruments used in assessing English proficiency and academic competency. Students will also come away with a basic understanding of the historical, legal, and theoretical framework of education for ELs. Finally, this course will enable students to become skillful practitioners and reflective professionals who strive to be agents for positive change in the lives of their students, in their schools, and in society as a whole.
