Description
This course explores a comprehensive literacy framework for emergent
and early reading instruction, focusing on the foundations of
literacy, how reading develops and the stages of readers. Key topics
include learner motivation, oral language, common models of reading,
phonological and phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and
comprehension. Students will examine and facilitate assessments and
instructional practices that foster literacy development, grounded
in the Science of Reading. Emphasis is placed on effective
individual, small-group and large-group instruction. A field-based
practicum experience in a primary classroom is included. (4 s.h.)
