This course will provide an introduction to the last two centuries of Middle Eastern history. Focus will be on the late Ottoman Empire, the challenge of western imperialism, the rise of revolutionary nationalism, the Zionist movement, the Cold War in the Middle East, and the tumultuous relationship with the United States in the 20th century. The course will also delve deeply into the culture, literature, philosophy, and art of the region. Prerequisite: sophomore standing. (3 s.h.)
