The USFWC Staff group is available as a means of communication and collaboration for individuals working in the USF Writing Center.  Staff members may access the group resources by logging in to My.USF.

Job Description: USF Writing Center

Job Description:   Peer consultants employed by the writing center are primarily responsible for providing helpful feedback to writers.  Therefore, they must possess excellent writing skills and an ability to work constructively with a variety of personality types. 

 

USF Writing Center staff members typically work between three to seven hours per week.  Their responsibilities include the following:

  • Working with individual writers in a face-to-face setting for 30-minute sessions.  During these sessions the consultant is responsible for asking helpful questions and modeling the habits of mind possessed by good writers.  These sessions are most frequently conducted face to face, but some may be conducted via digital document exchange. 
  • Attending a one-hour staff meeting and training session held on Mondays at 4:00 pm.
  • Actively engaging in various projects designed to improve one’s skills as both a writer and a consultant, including the following:
    • initial staff training and development during the first semester of employment;
    • ongoing readings and projects related to writing center practice, and staff training;
    • consistent reflection upon one’s practice as a consultant.
  • Contributing to the work of the writing center and the task of communicating the writing center’s mission:
    • maintaining writing center records, including efforts related to both assessment and research;
    • generating content for the USF Writing Center's social media accounts;
    • developing print and/or online materials to benefit the writing center and those it serves;
    • contributing to any other projects or publications undertaken by the writing center, including various staff development opportunities and the possibility of state and regional conferences.

Compensation:   Peer consultants in the USF Writing Center receive an hourly wage of $12.00.

 

 

Eligibility Requirements:  Positions on the writing center staff are not limited to work-study students.  All students are eligible to apply, so long as they meet the following criteria:

  • sophomore standing or higher;
  • a grade of “B” or better in ENG 111/HON 211 and ENG 112/HON 212 (or equivalent course(s) at another institution);
  • a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher;
  • the ability to attend weekly staff meetings on Monday afternoons (typically scheduled at 4:00 pm).

Application Process:  As a part of the application process, candidates must submit the following materials prior to a brief discussion/interview with the director of the writing center.  These materials may be submitted either in print or via email.

  • a letter/email of application;
  • a letter/email of recommendation from a USF faculty member addressing (a) the applicant’s writing ability, (b) his/her interpersonal communication skills, and (c) his/her disposition for working collaboratively and supportively with a variety of people;
  • two (2) pieces of writing, one of which must be academic in nature;
  • written analysis of a sample essay provided by the director of the writing center.
