The USFWC Staff group is available as a means of communication and collaboration for individuals working in the USF Writing Center.  Staff members may access the group resources by logging in to My.USF.

Job Description: USF Writing Center

Job Description:   Consultants employed by the writing center are primarily responsible for providing helpful feedback to writers.  Therefore, they must possess excellent writing skills and an ability to work constructively with a variety of personality types. 

USF Writing Center staff members typically work between four to eight hours per week.  Their responsibilities include the following:

  • Working with individual writers in a face-to-face setting for 30-minute sessions.  During these sessions the consultant is responsible for asking helpful questions and modeling the habits of mind possessed by good writers. 
  • Attending a one-hour staff meeting and training session held every week on Monday at 3:30 pm.
  • Engaging in various projects designed to improve one’s skills as both a writer and a consultant, including the following:
    • readings and projects related to writing center practice, and staff training;
    • regular, consistent reflection upon one’s practice as a consultant.
  • Contributing to the work of the writing center and the task of communicating the writing center’s mission, including the following:
    • maintaining WritingCenter records, including efforts related to both assessment and research;
    • developing print and/or online materials to benefit the writing center and those it serves;
    • contributing to any other projects or publications undertaken by the writing center, including various staff development opportunities, and the possibility of state and regional conferences.

Compensation:   First-year staff members receive an hourly wage of $9.00, with a 50-cent raise for each additional year of service and/or participation at a local, regional, or national conference.

Eligibility Requirements:  Positions on the writing center staff are not limited to work-study students.  All students are eligible to apply, so long as they meet the following criteria:

  • Sophomore standing or higher.
  • A grade of “B” or better in LAR 111 and LAR 112 (or equivalent course(s) at another institution)
  • an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Application Process:  As a part of the hiring process, candidates must submit the following materials prior to a brief discussion/interview with the director of the writing center.  These materials may be submitted either in print or via email.

  • a letter of application;
  • a letter of recommendation from a USF faculty member addressing both the applicant’s writing ability and his/her interpersonal communication skills;
  • two (2) pieces of writing, one of which must be academic in nature;
  • written analysis of a sample essay provided by the director of the writing center.
