Description
The study of database management systems used to store, flexibly organize and easily retrieve information items. The course introduces the capabilities and techniques of a modern DBMS to students of Computer Science, Computer Information Systems and Business Administration students with Management Information Systems concentration. The focus is the relational database model using Microsoft Access for computer lab work. Other models considered are flatfile, hierarchical and object-oriented databases. Techniques of proper table design and normalization are followed by implementation practice and project simulation. Database queries, reports and interfaces are developed for end-users and the project simulation. Ethical issues of mass, shared information storage and database documentation are also discussed. Prerequisite: COM 201, with COM 202 or COM 301 recommended.
