This course surveys the social and cultural contexts of language. It examines the ways relationships and structures in society influence language and how language influences society, the attitudes and ideologies people have about languages, language varieties, and their speakers (e.g. issues of prestige and stigma). This includes variations in language that are determined by region, sex, social level, cultural groupings, and industry. Further, the course explores how speakers and writers use language to contruct identities and interact with different audiences.
