This course introduces students to specific and frequently occurring health issues within the adult medical-surgical population. The didactic portion of the course will expose students to clinical problems seen frequently within each of the body systems. The course will include specific critical thinking experiences to expand the student's knowledge base in a way that will assist them in actualizing this knowledge in the clinical setting. Students will develop beginning history-taking and assessment skills, with emphasis placed on determining normal vs abnormal clinical signs. The concepts of evidence-based practice will be reinforced, and the concept of interdisciplinary care will be introduced. The role of the nurse as educator is also introduced. Students will complete a holistic health assessment during this course, incorporating aspects of all prior nursing coursework.
