Description

This course explores the dynamics of social diversity in American society, critically analyzing prejudice and discrimination from both individual and societal perspectives while also celebrating the strengths and richness that diverse cultures and people bring to community life. Students will reflect on their own cultural and racial identities while developing curiosity and a willingness to engage with people from backgrounds different than their own. Through stories, reflection and dialogue, students will consider the role of several dimensions of diversity (race, ability, gender, etc.) in shaping human experience. Emphasis is placed on recognizing personal biases, understanding systemic inequities, and cultivating respect across boundaries of difference. This course fulfills the intercultural awareness core course requirement. (3 s.h.)
